OUR STORY

Who we are

AATEA Consultants Limited was founded by Hinerangi Edwards and Kiwa Hammond in 2000 with the support of their whānau and pakeke. Having lived and worked in Wellington for a number of years, Hinerangi and Kiwa built up a clientele of predominantly public sector organisations providing services in kaupapa Māori communications. Much improved information communication technologies and youthful doses of passion and commitment enabled them to successfully relocate AATEA to Taranaki, then 12 years later to Te Wairoa where they established a second office. AATEA provided them with the means to live their dream offering transformational kaupapa Māori services nationally while living on their tūrangawaewae﹘raising their tamariki, and being involved in their local communities.

Celebrating 20 years in business, AATEA is now widely recognised as an outstanding provider of kaupapa Māori facilitation and research, te reo Māori translation, and educational services throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, building strategic capability and collaboration through these services. Its team has grown to 15 staff members based in Hāwera, Te Wairoa and Wellington.

Our Purpose

AATEA strives to undertake all work with purpose, with tikanga, responsibility and aroha while upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi. AATEA also prioritises collaborative relationships, supporting organisations to effect sustainable change in their local areas, whilst improving outcomes for all. Ultimately, AATEA affirms whānau, hapū and iwi Māori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand, and Māori success as important to Aotearoa New Zealand success.

Being community and kaupapa focused, AATEA aims to create meaningful partnerships with other organisations that also care about community and causes. If your organisation believes a kaupapa Māori approach can progress your pre-existing work, or you work with or for Māori, we would love to explore how we might collaborate to create positive outcomes for communities at home and abroad.

Heoi anō, pērā hoki ki ngā kupu a Tama-te-rangi, “He ao te rangi ka uhia, mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere ai”, ko tā te mahi a AATEA, he whakakākahu i ō tātau hapori, pāpori hoki ki ngā rauemi hei huruhuru kia rere pai ai i roto i tēnei ao. Nō reira, whakarauika mai i raro i tēnei o ngā kaupapa.

And so, as expressed by Tama-te-rangi,
"As clouds bedeck the sky, so do feathers enable a bird to fly"
The task of AATEA is to endow our communities, our society with ways and means that, like feathers, enable kaupapa to take flight. Therefore, let’s work collaboratively in this initiative.
